What's New at Pack 119
Sportsmanship was the name of the game as the Scouts of Pack 119 eagerly raced their super cool derby cars down the track. You could tell that a lot of time, effort and heart went into the design and crafting of all the cars!
Our big race day was filled with fun and friendly competition... however frustration reared its ugly head as well when the track failed to function properly causing a bit of a delay, but everyone’s patience was impressive and appreciated as we eventually came to the decision that cutting our losses was the thing to do as we pulled out the stopwatches and carried on the old-fashioned way.
All of our boys are to be congratulated on all the hard work, sportsmanship and fun displayed throughout the process and event. A special thanks goes out to our Event Co-Chairmen: Connie Weinstock, Lou Araujo, and Eric Strakusek. Cubmaster Steinke kept us all energized and entertained during the long wait! Our special judges Mrs. McCullley, Mary Sabol, and Chris Arango were champions. We’d also like to thank all the Derby Committee Members and “additional” volunteers who all made the event possible. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s all worth it when you see the Scout smiles light-up as their cars zoom down the track. What a fun day!

Welcome to Cub Scout Pack 119
Scouting is Fun with a Purpose!
And boy do we know how to have fun in Pack 119!
Cub Scouting is a program where boys in first through fifth grades participate in fun activities and challenges all under the umbrella of character development, physical fitness and citizenship. In our pack, boys develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship skills that influence their lives long into adulthood. That is the ultimate goal and underlies all of our activities in Pack 119. There are so many ways to build these skills and at the heart of all of it is fun and family.
At our monthly family Pack Nights we celebrate our scouts’ achievements, play games, participate in educational activities, sing songs, get crafty, perform skits and demonstrations, and enjoy the fellowship that comes from gathering all the scouts and families together.
We also have monthly Pack Outings (like field trips) that our scouts and their families may choose to attend. Sometimes our activities are more educational like when we visited the Great Lakes Navel Base or had our Lock-In at the Rockford Discovery Museum. Sometimes our activities are just plain fun like when we attend sporting events, ski trips, the theatre, and places like Medieval Times. Sometimes a little of both like when Den Meetings happen at the Library, the bowling alley or the local Police Station.
Pack 119 is currently made up of 5 Dens – one at each grade level (although this number may change from year to year depending on enrollment). All the activities in scouting are designed to be age-appropriate to a boy’s development. As such, most of the true scouting activities are done at the Den level. A Den is a group of 6 to 10 boys of the same grade level who remain in the same group throughout Cub Scouts. Together they target the skills and activities needed to move through the ranks of Cub Scouting (Tiger > Wolf > Bear > Webelos I > Webelos II).
pack119.nwsc.org - Our Website Now in its Second Year
Welcome one and all to the fully-functioning, recently minted, perpetually updating website for Pack 119. Our hope is that this page becomes your first stop when Pack 119 information is what you seek. At present, we're still cleaning up loose ends for the 2011-2012 Scouting year, however you can still have a look at last years pictures as well as starting to commit some of the dates on our complete calendar of events for the 2011/12 Scouting year to your own personal calendars. We're open to any and all ideas for what you think would be helpful to have on the site. The plan is to continue to build as we go and leave behind something greater than what we found so that scouting continues to flourish with Pack 119.
Notes from the Webmaster
Before you dig any deeper, there's a couple things about the site you should know. The first is that to download the Event Flyers on the Pack Events page, you're going to need a browser plug-in called Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you don't already have it, which I'm guessing most of you already do, you can download it here.
Second is that within your browser, you'll need to have 'javascript enabled' in order to view the pictures. The good news here is that unless you've specifically disabled javascript, it will already be on by default in most browsers. If you've actively turned javascript off though... while true that you're marginally safer from a security standpoint, it's also sort of like driving your car after you've removed the carburetor and fan belt. So much of the 2010 web is powered by javascript (including our picture page), that the remote chance of a security breach isn't worth having it turned off.
The third and most important thing to know about this site is that parts of it may appear broken to you if you're using Internet Explorer 6 or 7. The reason for that is because those browsers don't support modern web standards. Truth is, if you're using either of those two versions of Internet Explorer for your web surfing, you're looking at not only our site here, but the internet as a whole through broken glasses... and why bother when so many superior browsers are available for free! We recommend either Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Opera. All free to download and superior to Internet Explorer.
One way or another, if you have any questions regarding the website, problems you're having with it, or just want to make a suggestion for information you think would be useful to have here on the web for all to have access to... feel free to contact me here.
